Gauteng Community Safety cautions police against emulating crime-fighting style of KZN Commissioner

Gauteng Community Safety cautions police against emulating crime-fighting style of KZN Commissioner! The Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has raised concerns about adopting a heavy-handed approach to policing, similar to that employed by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

This comes after statistics from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) revealed worrying trends regarding police conduct in Gauteng.

KZN’s Crime-Fighting Approach Sparks Debate

Under Commissioner Mkhwanazi’s leadership, KZN police have reportedly killed over 100 people suspected of criminal activities in the past year. While some hail this as effective crime-fighting, others caution against the risks of such aggressive tactics.

Speaking at a meeting on Friday at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, the IPID Gauteng Division presented data covering the period between April and September 2024. During this time, there were 15 cases in which Gauteng police unjustifiably killed individuals in the line of duty. These incidents resulted in the arrest of 10 South African Police Service (SAPS) officers in the province.

A Call for Balanced Policing

Bandile Masuku, Chairperson of the provincial Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, emphasized the need for Gauteng police to combat crime within the framework of the law. He expressed concerns about police leaders trying to emulate KZN’s aggressive approach for the sake of popularity.

“With the seemingly social media popularity of the [Police] commissioner of KZN, all other commissioners want to do the same and instruct their members to be like in KZN,” Masuku said.

He cautioned against a “competition for popularity,” noting that prioritizing notoriety over lawful conduct could lead to severe repercussions. “We must see more criminals dying and being shot; that makes your commissioner of provincial service effective. But I did warn and caution against that. We shouldn’t be in that competition for popularity because it brings about a lot of wrongness too. We wouldn’t know what the intention is of the whole thing,” Masuku added.

At the same time, Masuku acknowledged the importance of maintaining a tough stance on crime, stating that Gauteng police should not appear lenient in their efforts to protect communities.

IPID’s Role in Oversight

IPID, South Africa’s police watchdog, plays a crucial role in holding law enforcement accountable for misconduct. The organization investigates cases of excessive use of force, unjustified killings, and other abuses of power by SAPS officers.

The statistics presented by IPID underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement in Gauteng, where crime rates remain high and public demand for safer communities grows louder. However, the watchdog’s findings also highlight the risks of overzealous policing and the potential for human rights violations.

Balancing Public Safety and Accountability

The debate over policing styles raises broader questions about the balance between public safety and accountability. Advocates for aggressive tactics argue that they are necessary in regions with high crime rates, while critics warn that such approaches can erode public trust in law enforcement and result in unnecessary loss of life.

Masuku’s comments reflect a push for a middle ground—where police are effective in fighting crime but remain bound by ethical and legal constraints. This approach aims to uphold the rights of citizens while addressing the urgent need for safer communities in Gauteng.

Lessons from KZN

The discussion also serves as a case study on the implications of different policing strategies. While KZN’s approach has garnered attention for its results, it has also faced criticism for excessive use of force and potential abuse of power.

Masuku’s warning to Gauteng police leaders is a reminder that effective policing cannot come at the expense of justice. By avoiding a “race for popularity” and focusing on responsible law enforcement, Gauteng can set an example of balanced and ethical policing in South Africa.

The Road Ahead

As Gauteng grapples with high crime rates, the pressure on law enforcement to deliver results remains immense. However, as the Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and IPID emphasize, any strategy must align with the principles of accountability, legality, and respect for human rights.

The conversation around policing styles in Gauteng and KZN highlights the need for a nationwide discourse on crime-fighting strategies that prioritize both public safety and the rule of law.
