The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) is calling on law enforcement to fast-track the prosecution of those found guilty of corruption.
SAFTU says it’s concerning that all spheres of the public sector are affected by maladministration and irregularities.
The views follow the release of a report by Corruption Watch on incidents reported to the organization last year.
In its report, Corruption Watch says it received over 2,100 complaints with the mining sector making up the majority of complaints
SAFTU’s Trevor Shaku said it’s also concerning that there is still some underreporting of corrupt activities within state-owned entities.
“That corruption complaints received by corruption watch from the state-owned entities amounted to 11% is not only unsurprising but a reflection of underreporting. Looting through outsourcing and procurement corruption in the State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) is widespread to the point of crippling major SOEs like Eskom.”
