The City of Harare has shed light on the cause of the building collapse that occurred in the central business district on Saturday.
ZRP Confirms Fatality and Collaborates with Authorities
In an official statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that one person had died in the unfortunate collapse of a building in Harare over the weekend. The police further disclosed the names of the injured while sharing details about the number and types of vehicles damaged as a result of the incident.
They assured the public that they were working in collaboration with relevant authorities, including the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), to conduct a thorough investigation and determine the cause behind the building’s collapse.
On Sunday, Harare’s municipality took to Facebook and confirmed the building collapse. They also confirmed the demise of one person. Most importantly, the City of Harare provided a cause for the building collapse.

According to the City of Harare, the building collapsed under the weight of a billboard that strong winds and a heavy downpour in the central business district on Saturday had toppled. The municipality further revealed that the city’s fire brigade successfully rescued two individuals who were trapped within the partially collapsed building.
“One person is believed to have died after strong winds and a heavy downpour resulted in a billboard falling on a building which partially collapsed in central Harare this afternoon. Eight people were injured and taken to hospital. Two were trapped inside the collapsed building and they were rescued by the City Fire Brigade. Several cars were damaged during the incident. Investigations are still in progress,” the statement by the City of Harare reads.
The building that collapsed is situated along Chinhoyi Street in Harare Central Business District, near Gulf Complex.
