ZRP Finally Confirms Arrest of Neville Mutsvangwa And Associates

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has officially confirmed the arrest of Neville Mutsvangwa, son of Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa and Women’s Affairs Minister Monica Mutsvangwa.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the ZRP also provided additional details regarding Mutsvangwa’s arrest and charges.

Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi disclosed that Mutsvangwa was arrested with two other individuals; Elias Majachani (45) and Simbarashe Tichingana (38). The trio are being charged with violating section 14 (1) of the Bank Use Promotion and Suppression of Money Laundering Act, Chapter 24:24.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said Mutsvangwa and his co-accused will make their initial court appearance on Friday.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Neville Sunungurai Mutsvangwa (44), Elias Majachani (45) and Simbarashe Tichingana (38) for contravening section 14 (1) of the Bank Use Promotion and Suppression of Money Laundering Act, Chapter 24:24. The trio is expected to appear in court on 10th May 2024,” the statement reads.

Authorities have intensified efforts to combat illegal currency trading and money laundering, particularly involving the new currency, Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG). Over 100 illegal foreign currency traders have been arrested in recent weeks, with at least 65 apprehensions in Harare alone. These individuals are being held without bail pending legal proceedings.

This is not the first time Neville Mutsvangwa has faced legal scrutiny. Previously, he was arrested twice on rape charges, although he was never convicted. In 2019, police raided his office in Harare and seized US$200,000, leading to accusations of under-declaring seized money by police detectives.

Additionally, Neville was accused of undermining government policy by selling Starlink units in Zimbabwe, despite warnings that the satellite internet service was not authorized to operate in the country.
