Donkey Blamed for Catastrophic Road Accident Which Wrecked Toyota Fortuner
Two lives were tragically lost, and another person sustained injuries in a fatal road accident at Makhado Business Centre along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway early Thursday morning. The crash involved a Toyota Fortuner and an Irizar Mtethi bus, with authorities citing a stray donkey as the cause.
Collision Triggered by Stray Donkey
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the details of the accident in a series of social media posts. According to the ZRP, the accident occurred around 0030 hours at the 227-kilometre peg along the highway.
“Two people were killed while one person was injured when an Irizar Mtethi bus with two passengers on board hit a donkey. Subsequently, the bus veered off the road, leading to a head-on collision with a Toyota Fortuner vehicle with one passenger on board,” read the statement.
Eyewitnesses who arrived at the scene described the aftermath as devastating. “The Fortuner looks like it went under a tank,” said a local resident who lives near the site. Photographs from the accident show the Fortuner reduced to a mangled heap of metal, with the roof, sides, and front obliterated.
Vehicles Suffer Extensive Damage
The Fortuner, bearing the brunt of the collision, was left barely recognisable. Pieces of the wreckage were scattered across the nearby railway line, highlighting the force of the impact.
Meanwhile, the Irizar Mtethi bus sustained severe damage to its front end, particularly the engine block and windscreen. “The rest of the bus seems intact, but the front end is unrecognisable,” remarked a passer-by who arrived shortly after the incident.
Police Investigations Underway
The ZRP stated that the deceased’s bodies were transported to Beitbridge Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. The injured individual was also admitted to Beitbridge Hospital for treatment. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Local residents expressed concern over the dangers posed by stray animals on major highways. “This is not the first time a donkey has caused a fatal accident in this area. Authorities need to address this issue urgently,” commented another witness.
Police investigations are ongoing to determine further details about the incident.
