In the pictures, Mwonzora is arguing with hotel staff at the Premier Inn reception while barefoot in his red sweater and blue jeans.

Journalist Simba Chikanza said he booked two hotel rooms, one for himself and the other for Mwonzora. The politician then responded:

The other room, you can go. Kuroom kwangu I don’t want.

An irate Mwonzora briskly walked to the reception and charged:

You don’t know who I am. I am the President of my political party at home.

Chikanza, who was recording the scuffle, tweeted:

“I assisted the MDC leader, Hon. Douglas Mwonzora, with my own money to pay for his Premier Inn Banbury Oxford hotel room, which was 217; mine was 417.

“He abandoned his bag in 217 and paced up to invade mine before I could get there; Mwonzora then walked down to the reception room once again to harass the two female staffers who he had said could not speak proper English. He caused so much commotion that even other tenants wanted to beat him up.”

The MDC President responded to the tweet by Simba Chikanza, accusing him of lying and malice:

“I booked two rooms with a Zimbabwean friend who was not Chikanza. My friend occupied one room while I went to my room to sleep on that day leaving Chikanza in the reception. I was fast asleep when I was awoken by some movement in the room.

“Upon waking up I noticed Mr Chikanza in my room with his phones. I had no idea at that time how he had gained entry into my room. I chased him from my room by threatening to beat him up. I then went to report to reception about the intrusion.

“The hotel reception told me that Mr Chikanza had obtained duplicate keys after convincing them that he was my friend. I made it clear to the hotel staff that, for security reasons, I did not want anyone in my room. They gave me their assurances.

” Mr Chikanza never paid for my room, as he claims. Why he would come to my room whilst I was asleep at that odd hour of the day is still a mystery to me. I can only think that he wanted to harm me one way or the other.”
