Hanging The Mic For Good?

On 6 March, Ti Gonzi, born Tinashe Gonzara, startled fans with a bittersweet announcement on social media. He revealed that he is dropping an album in April and hinted that he will hang the mic after that.

Ti Gonzi announced:

“I just want to drop the “From Boys To Men” album on my birthday on the 13th of April, and then I QUIT MUSIC sezvakaitwa na TAKURA. After that, I will release my debut book,” DARK NIGHT”.This book will talk about THE LIFE, experiences, hardships, differences, ambition, corruption, hate, spirituality and THE DREAM of TIGONZI as a Zimbabwean.”

In February, fellow rapper Takura released a touching video explaining that he is quitting music for mental health reasons. He added that he wanted to release a deluxe album but had struggled to create even a single song.

Yesterday, Ti Gonzi sat for an interview with Phathisani and Tinashe Chikuse. He said the “malfunction” in the Zimbabwean music industry is one reason he is leaving his career.

The Zvenyu hitmaker was blunt:

“I’m a hip-hop artist with the biggest award in the country. I am an artist with number-one hit songs. If you look at Kure, 2019, it was the song of the year. Ndinei guys? What do I have? Chii chandakawana from Kure? Do you think Jah prayzah, as a Zimbabwean musician, is at the level he should be if you’re comparing him with other guys like Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania and Cassper Nyovest from SA? Do you think their pockets match?

“Jah Prayzah, Tocky Vibes, Killer T or Freeman, are all over. Do you think these four can match celebrated South African artists? Zimbabweans are talented. We have ana Takura. The [music] industry is malfunctions. Ngatisatombo tenderera nyaya iyoyo.”
