Tragedy: Nine Eskom Employees Critically Injured After Transformer at Matla Power Station Explodes
Nine Eskom personnel were seriously injured after a transformer exploded at the Matla Power Station in Mpumalanga.
The explosion occurred around 5 PM on Thursday and affected Unit 6 of the station.
Eskom Confirms Transformer Explosion
Eskom has confirmed a transformer explosion at Matla Power Station in Mpumalanga, leaving nine employees injured, with at least one in critical condition.
In a statement shared on X , the power utility said,
“[At] approximately 5pm, a transformer explosion occurred at Matla Power Station in Mpumalanga, affecting Unit 6. As a precautionary measure, Unit 5 was taken offline to ensure the safety of all employees and contractors on-site.
The power utility company has assured the public that its technical teams are actively working to assess the aftermath of the transformer explosion at Matla Power Station. According to Eskom, evaluations began immediately following the incident and are expected to continue through the evening and into the following day.
“Our technical teams are on-site assessing the situation and will continue to do so throughout the evening and into [today]. The suspension of load shedding remains unchanged. Eskom will issue regular update reports,” the power utility said.

Emergency Measures in Place
Bheki Nxumalo, Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation, expressed concern for the injured workers.
He assured the public that all injured workers were receiving medical attention.
“Our first thoughts are with those who have been injured and we are ensuring they get the medical attention they need. All emergency protocols have been activated.” he said.
Emergency protocols have since been activated to contain the situation.
