State Media Lifts Controversial Ban over Winky D’s Music

In a surprising move, Zimbabwe’s state media has lifted its controversial ban on popular Zimdancehall artist Winky D, much to the delight of his legion of fans.

The ban, initially imposed due to the politically charged nature of his album “Eureka Eureka,” has finally been reversed, sparking widespread joy and discussion among fans and critics alike

Banned for Speaking Out

The musician faced over a year of exclusion from state-controlled broadcasts following the release of his socially conscious album “Eureka Eureka.”

The album’s pointed social commentary did not sit well with the ruling party, leading to a comprehensive ban on his music from state broadcasts.

New Leadership, New Direction

According to New Zimbabwe, the decision to restore Winky D’s music to state airwaves is reportedly part of a new direction spearheaded by the recently appointed acting CEO, Charles Munganasa.

There is a new board which is bringing the new strategy. Of course, we will not play all of his songs but his coming back on the radio is a strategy by the new board. The old board took things more personally and were rigid,” said the source.

Partial Lift, Selective Bans Remain

Despite the overall positive development, not all of Winky D’s music has been cleared for airplay.

Certain tracks from the “Eureka Eureka” album, specifically “Ibotso” and “Dzimba dzemabwe,” remain banned.

Fans and Social Media Respond

The lifting of the ban has been met with a wave of positive reactions across social media platforms. Fans and supporters have celebrated the decision, expressing hope for more freedom and less censorship in the arts. Poking fun at the state media, Winky D’s fans opined that the chanter should actually ban ZBC and all the other state media from playing his music. Netizens argued that Winky D is bigger than ZBC.
