A psychiatric report revealed Mkhwanazi showed no signs of mental illness or remorse for his crimes. Judge Cassim Moosa condemned Mkhwanazi’s actions, stating, “Despite the accused’s relative youth, the vicious nature of the crimes far outweighs any argument for leniency.” Mkhwanazi received additional sentences for obstructing justice (10 years) and rape (15 years).

The sentencing brings closure to the victims’ families and sends a strong message that violence against women will not be tolerated. The South African government’s efforts to combat gender-based violence have been reinforced by this verdict. Mkhwanazi’s case may be reviewed after 30 years.
