2 killed in N2 horror crash near Spaghetti Junction! A devastating accident on KwaZulu-Natal’s N2 highway claimed the lives of two people and left eight others injured on Friday night. Emergency responders rushed to the scene just north of Spaghetti Junction near Chesterville, where the tragic incident unfolded.
The Incident
Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics reported that the crash occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll multiple times and eject passengers.
“It is alleged that the driver lost control, resulting in the vehicle rolling over multiple times and ejecting passengers,” said Jamieson.
Upon arriving at the scene, paramedics conducted a triage assessment. Tragically, two men in their 30s, including the driver, were declared dead on the scene.
Rescue Efforts
The driver’s body was trapped in the wreckage, requiring intervention from emergency services, including the eThekwini Fire Department, to extricate him. The second deceased, also a man, was found outside the vehicle.
“Two patients sustained critical injuries and were placed on manual ventilators on the scene by Advanced Life Support paramedics before being rushed to a nearby hospital,” said Jamieson.
Additionally, six other passengers suffered serious injuries and were treated at the scene by paramedics. They were subsequently transported to various Durban hospitals for further care.
Road Closures
The accident caused significant disruptions, with the northbound lanes of the N2 closed for several hours to facilitate rescue operations and clean-up efforts.
Jamieson confirmed that the South African Police Service (SAPS) attended the scene and has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Festive Season Road Safety Concerns
This incident adds to a string of road accidents during the festive season, a period typically marked by high traffic volumes and increased risks on South African roads. Emergency teams have faced a surge in calls related to vehicle accidents across Durban and surrounding areas.
On Christmas Day, paramedics attended to three separate accidents in the region:
- N2 Crash: A driver sustained critical injuries and required urgent medical care.
- M19 Incident: Near Otto Volek, a driver was seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash and rushed to the hospital.
- Umgeni Road Rollover: Another accident saw emergency teams responding to a vehicle rollover.
A Plea for Caution
The series of accidents has prompted Jamieson and other emergency responders to urge motorists to exercise caution during the holiday season.
“We urge all motorists to please be cautious on the roads. Slow down and reach your destination alive,” said Jamieson.
Key Safety Tips for Motorists
With the festive season underway, authorities and safety advocates recommend the following measures to reduce road accidents:
- Adhere to Speed Limits: Drive at speeds appropriate for the road and weather conditions.
- Avoid Fatigue: Ensure you are well-rested before embarking on long trips.
- Avoid Distractions: Refrain from using your phone or engaging in activities that take your focus off the road.
- Don’t Drink and Drive: Never operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Use Seatbelts: Ensure all passengers are securely buckled up.
Investigation Underway
The SAPS will continue their investigation to determine the factors contributing to the N2 crash. Preliminary reports suggest high speed and possible driver error, but further analysis will provide a clearer picture.
A Somber Reminder
The tragedy on the N2 serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the need for heightened vigilance on the roads. With the festive season in full swing, authorities hope that motorists will take heed of safety warnings to prevent further loss of life.
As families mourn the loss of their loved ones, emergency responders and law enforcement continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of all road users during this high-risk period.
