2 of 5 men linked to foiled cash-in-transit heist in Cape Town re-arrested

Two of the five men linked to a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Cape Town have been re-arrested by the Hawks.

Last Monday, five men were arrested for planning a cash-in-transit robbery in Khayelitsha.

Three of them appeared at the Local Magistrates Court on Thursday.

However, the case against all five was struck from the court roll.

The court said the accused were not charged within 48 hours after being arrested, as required by the law.

Twenty -four-year-old Sihle Mabhongo and 46-year-old Simphiwe Mzanywa were in hospital at the time, after being wounded in a shootout with police.

Eight other would-be robbers were killed in the shootout.

Western Cape Hawks spokesperson Siyabulela Vukubi: “Mzanywa appeared briefly at the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court on 13 August 2024. It was further established that he is currently on parole on another matter where he was arrested during 2022 and released in 2023. Mabhongo is currently in hospital under police guard.

“Both accused are allegedly involved in an incident that occurred on 05 August 2024 where they were caught with an assortment of firearms, explosives and ammunition in Town Two, Khayelitsha.”
