At least 29 elected councillors in the Tshwane metro owe the municipality more than R2.5 million in service debt.
A report tabled to the Tshwane council on Friday showed that at the end of March this year, these councillors have not settled their municipal bills for over 90 days.
At least one councillor has an outstanding bill of over R860,000 which they have not settled for over a year.
The metro said that councillors cannot encourage people to pay their service bills if they are not doing the same.
The report showed the municipality has issued a final demand to 23 councillors, restricted the water of three, and cut the electricity connections of three.
EFF Councillor Ngwako Seanego said that the capital city should go further and deduct the money from the councillors’ salaries.
“The EFF stands firm in demanding the highest level of ethics and accountability from elected officials, we will continue to advocate for the interests of communities above all else.”
The Tshwane council has warned defaulting councillors that not settling their municipal debt is a breach of their code of conduct and could result in them being expelled.
