4 arrested for Eastern Cape mass shooting

Four people including a woman will be appearing in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on Monday, October 14, following a mass shooting in the Eastern Cape.

The shooting incident took place on Wednesday, October 9 in Dyakalashe, NU 12 in Motherwell where four people were shot.

The provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said that the suspects arrested one woman, 27, and three men aged between 29 and 32.

“According to the report, it is alleged that at approximately 9pm, the victims were inside a house watching television, when three unknown armed men stormed into the house through the kitchen door. It is alleged that the balaclava-clad suspects opened fire on the four victims. One victim (female) died on the scene, and the second victim died on arrival at the hospital. Two other victims (male and female) were admitted to the hospital for medical attention,” Mawisa said.

Police launched a manhunt for the suspects. The Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit in Gqeberha is investigating the case.

“The detectives managed to arrest four suspects (one female 27 and three males aged between 29 and 32). The female was arrested in Motherwell and the three males were arrested in Zwide and Joe Slovo,” Mawisa said.

Police also revealed the identity of the shooting victims who died.

“The two victims, who died during the shooting had since been identified as Yandisa Mabuto, 47, and Thembekiza Manyashe, 40,” Mawisa said.
