4 die after drinking wine

Police in Cape Town are investigating an inquest after four people died following the consumption of wine from a wine estate in Stellenbosch on 26 July.

Cops said the first victim, a 63-year-old woman, died on 27 July, a day after she drank the wine. Her death was followed by a 41-year-old man who died on 28 July at the hospital where he was admitted.

On 31 July, two other people, a 15-year-old girl and a 43-year-old woman, also died at the hospital on the same day.

It’s alleged that seven people drank wine at the estate in the Stellenbosch area, but they got sick afterwards, and four of them died while the other three survived.

Of the three who survived, two were treated at the hospital, but one didn’t need medical assistance. The victims were farm workers in the Stellenbosch area, and it’s alleged the wine they drank was expired.

A source close to the incident said the farm workers had a habit of drinking wine from a neighbouring farm. The wine they drank was in a 25-litre container and looked like water.

They drank it on a Friday but soon began suffering from various symptoms, including painful eyes, vomiting, and headaches.

Police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg said an inquest case has been opened.

“Stellenbosch police registered inquest cases for investigation following an incident on Friday, 26 July 2024, in which seven adults (male and female) drank alcohol on a farm in Stellenbosch. A 63-year-old female was admitted to the hospital where she was declared dead upon arrival on Saturday, 27 July 2024.

“A 41-year-old male was declared dead on 28 July 2024, while two females aged 15 and 43 died at a hospital in Parow on 31 July 2024. Two other victims were discharged from the hospital, and another victim didn’t need medical assistance. Post-mortems will be conducted to determine the causes of death.

“The circumstances surrounding the incident are the subject of an investigation by the South African Police Service. Anyone with any information about this incident is kindly requested to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111,” said Twigg.
