7 suspects arrested for kidnapping Chinese businesswoman! Authorities in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested seven suspects linked to the kidnapping of a Chinese businesswoman who was abducted in September while closing her bottle store in Kokstad.
This case marks another high-profile kidnapping investigation in South Africa, where organized crime targeting business owners has been on the rise.
The arrests were a result of an intensive, collaborative investigation led by the Hawks, a specialized unit focused on combating organized crime, with assistance from multiple law enforcement agencies.

The Abduction Incident
The kidnapping incident occurred in September when the 46-year-old businesswoman and her security guard were accosted by a group of suspects as she was closing her business.
Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo detailed the events, stating that the woman and her security guard were forced into her vehicle by the suspects, aged between 21 and 48.
While the vehicle was later found abandoned in Bhongweni, Kokstad, the security guard had been dropped off in the vicinity, leaving the suspects to escape with the businesswoman.
Following her abduction, a kidnapping case was filed at the Kokstad police station, and the docket was transferred to the Hawks for a thorough investigation.
The incident raised concerns in the local business community and led to calls for swift police action to ensure the woman’s safe return and to curb the growing issue of kidnappings for ransom.
Demands for Ransom Escalate
Shortly after the abduction, the kidnappers contacted the victim’s family, demanding a ransom of R15 million for her release.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Mhlongo, after extensive negotiations, the family initially paid the suspects R305,000 in hopes of securing her release. However, the suspects went back on their word, refusing to free the woman and demanding additional money.
As days passed, the suspects increased the ransom demand, this time requesting an additional R1.2 million. Despite the payment made, the family’s concern heightened as the kidnappers continued to withhold the woman, prompting law enforcement to escalate their efforts to track down the culprits.
Breakthrough in the Investigation and Arrests
The Hawks, along with Crime Intelligence Technical Surveillance, the Special Task Force, Durban Metro Police, and the Counter Narcotics team, intensified their investigation as the ransom demands persisted.
Working tirelessly, authorities made a breakthrough on Wednesday, 6 November, successfully apprehending one of the suspects. This arrest led to a series of further detentions, culminating in seven suspects being taken into custody.
Thanks to their efforts, the businesswoman was eventually located alive and promptly transported to the hospital for medical evaluation.
Lieutenant Colonel Mhlongo announced that more arrests are anticipated as the investigation progresses. The arrested suspects are scheduled to appear in the Kokstad Magistrate’s Court on 11 November 2024.
Praise for Law Enforcement and the Hawks’ Efforts
The KwaZulu-Natal Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General Lesetja Senona, commended the investigators and other officials involved in the operation.
He acknowledged their dedication and commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and expressed confidence in the Hawks’ continued efforts to address serious organized crimes, including kidnappings for ransom.
Kidnappings for ransom have been increasing in South Africa, often targeting business figures and their families. The quick response and thorough investigative work in this case highlight the efficacy of coordinated law enforcement efforts in such high-stakes scenarios.
Related Incident: Foiled Mock Kidnapping in Johannesburg
This case comes shortly after another kidnapping-related incident in Johannesburg in August. Five suspects, including three foreign nationals, were arrested in an intelligence-driven operation after a foiled mock kidnapping plot.
According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspects were apprehended during a sting operation involving private security, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department, and other law enforcement agencies.
The Johannesburg operation revealed that a South African woman was allegedly conspiring with foreign nationals to stage a mock kidnapping of her employer, aiming to extort significant funds from her business bank account.
The suspects, which included two Ugandans and one Malawian national, were apprehended in Melrose Arch, averting what could have been another lucrative criminal scheme.
Growing Threat of Kidnappings for Ransom in South Africa
The recent kidnappings underscore the increasing trend of ransom crimes, especially targeting business owners and prominent individuals.
Authorities continue to urge vigilance among South Africans and emphasize the importance of reporting suspicious activities to curb this growing threat.
As shown in these cases, law enforcement agencies, including the Hawks, are actively coordinating efforts to investigate and resolve kidnapping cases, but the underlying issue remains a significant challenge.
The successful operation in KwaZulu-Natal serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement collaboration in protecting citizens and dismantling organized criminal networks.
As the investigations continue, South Africans are hopeful that these arrests will lead to a reduction in such incidents, ensuring safer communities and greater confidence in law enforcement.
