The 7de Laan creator Danie Odendaal passed away in Langebaan in Western Cape on Wednesday evening at 77 years. The Citizen reports the renowned writer and producer died after a short illness.
Odendaal’s family confirmed his passing in a statement: “Danie lived a life full of creativity and warmth, quietly shaping the world around him through his storytelling. Known for his humour and wit, he had a way of speaking his mind that inspired those fortunate enough to know him.
The veteran TV producer and director reportedly suffered a stroke in 2019 while he was living in Pervillac, France. Odendaal’s health deteriorated over the past few months.
The producer, director, and writer also created Saartjie and Dennekruin 12 and also directed Dennekruin 12, Gallery; Die Man met ‘n Lyk om sy Nek, Beelde, Saartjie, Okavango: The Wild Frontier, and the miniseries Veldslag.

The South African will reveal his memorial and funeral details over the next few days. The creator of Afrikaans soap opera, 7de Laan, Danie Odendaal has passed away.
The legendary actor and producer died yesterday after a short illness. His long-time friend and colleague, Henry Mylne, says he has known Odendaal since the early 80s when they worked together at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
Mylne says Odendaal was an exceptionally talented person who served as head writer for a bilingual soap opera Egoli: Place of Gold for eight years.
“As producer and head writer he started 7de Laan and he took me with as director and we all know the success of the story on SABC 2, probably the biggest hit this country had in television history. It stayed at number one, one year and the next and the following.”
“The AD spaces for the advertisers sold out for three years in advance. Danie was a highly respected and very beloved colleague and friend. And I shall always miss him and cherish my years which were the best of years working with him,” adds Mylne.
