Zimbabwe Puts All Ports of Entry on High Alert Over Nestlé NAN Infant Formula Global Recall
The Government has placed all ports of entry on high alert following a global recall by food giant Nestlé of a single batch of NAN Special Pro HA infant formula manufactured in Germany.
The move is aimed at preventing the recalled product from entering Zimbabwe through unofficial channels, amid heightened concerns over consumer and child safety.
Recalled Batch Not Distributed Locally
The Ministry of Health and Child Care has confirmed that the affected batch — which carries an expiry date of December 15, 2026 — has not been distributed within Zimbabwe.
Despite this assurance, authorities have activated precautionary measures to ensure the product does not find its way into local markets through informal imports.
Government Acts After Nestlé Communication
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Dr Aspect Maunganidze, said the Government acted swiftly after receiving formal communication from Nestlé about the recall.
He said officials at all ports of entry have been instructed to remain vigilant and intercept any consignments of the affected product.
Dr Maunganidze also urged consumers to exercise caution, advising parents and caregivers to check expiry dates and batch numbers on infant formula products before use.
Proactive Approach to Consumer Safety
Dr Maunganidze said the latest action reflects Government’s continued commitment to food and consumer safety.
He cited previous interventions, including the recall of a batch of kombucha beverage and maize imported from Zambia in 2023, which were deemed unfit for the local market.
Public Urged to Stay Vigilant
Authorities have called on parents, caregivers, retailers and the general public to remain alert and report any suspected presence of the recalled infant formula to health officials.
The Ministry reiterated that early reporting and cooperation are critical to protecting public health, particularly that of infants and young children.
