Zimbabwean CFO of Northwest Government Arrested for Using Fake Permit to Secure Top Job in South Africa

Living true to the negative stereotype propagated by some South Africans that Zimbabweans are criminals who steal their jobs, Kudakwashe Mpofu has finally been arrested for fraud.

Mpofu, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the North West government in South Africa,  is accused of fraudulently obtaining his permanent residence permit in South Africa.

Resignation Amidst Legal Scrutiny

His arrest comes after South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi instructed the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate how Mpofu managed to secure a high-ranking job using a fake permit.

Mpofu recently resigned from his post amidst growing reports about the illegitimacy of his residence permit.

Motsoaledi stated at a media briefing on Sunday that Mpofu had been aware as early as June 2023 that his permit was invalid, yet he continued to hold his role as CFO for the provincial government.

Motsoaledi revealed during a media briefing that the permit used by Mpofu to secure his position was not issued by the Department of Home Affairs. The reference number on his document does not exist in their system, and the control number was legitimately issued to someone else.

“We can confirm that the permanent residence permit reference number appearing on Mr Mpofu’s document does not exist in our system, and we can further confirm that the control number appearing on Mr Mpofu’s purported document was not issued by the department to him, but rather it was legitimately issued to somebody else,” Motsoaledi explained.

A report published on March 10 by Sunday World highlighted Mpofu’s efforts to resist deportation by the Home Affairs Department. Mpofu expressed frustration over the department’s lack of response to his court papers.
