The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng said that while it is ready to take over Johannesburg, it doesn’t want to burn any bridges with its coalition partners.
This comes as Joburg Mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda fights to keep his job.
The ANC previously announced the mayor would resign before the end of the week, but Gwamanda still has the keys to the city.
ANC Gauteng Chairperson, Panyaza Lesufi said that there is consensus that the next Johannesburg mayor must come from the majority party, which is the ANC.
“The process of consultation with all other political parties that we have been working with unfortunately took long but we really believe it’s very important. You don’t just abandon people because you have found new players, new people, or new political parties that are supporting you,” Lesufi said.
