The unfolding saga surrounding the mysterious death of UZ Professor Itai Muwati took a dramatic turn as a relative alleged that he was buried alive on Madzibaba Ishmael’s command.
How Madzibaba Ishmael And His Men Buried Professor Itai Muwati Alive
The Professor was fatally assaulted by Madzibaba Ishmael’s followers, purportedly under the cult leader’s supervision. The deceased professor’s widow was reportedly taken away by one of Madzibaba Ishmael’s closest associates, while Professor Muwati was still alive before being buried.

Muwati, a former UZ Professor, had been residing at Madzibaba Ishmael’s shrine in Nyabira and had allegedly decided to sever ties with the cult prior to the attack.
After two years of persistent efforts, the family finally obtained the postmortem report, which revealed Muwati’s cause of death as poisoning. The family had faced obstacles in obtaining the autopsy report from authorities at Nyabira Police Station. Despite these challenges, they managed to exhume Muwati’s remains from the shallow grave at the shrine where he was hastily buried.
Family Pursues Justice
In their quest for justice, Professor Muwati’s family is now seeking the return of his possessions, including a herd of 30 cattle, two vehicles, and a grinding mill.
The family members approached H-Metro with additional details about Professor Muwati’s demise confirming his poisoning.
Tichie D Madiwanashe, who identified himself as the Professor’s nephew, emotionally recounted the alleged brutality his uncle endured, stating:
“You were beaten whilst Ishmael was seated on a chair urging his assassins to deal with you ruthlessly, I am in tears sekuru as I write. RIP Mkrugenzi, I can imagine the horror you went through.”
Madiwanashe vowed to seek justice for his uncle, asserting:
“We are not resting, your mine, your vehicles, cattles, hanga, chickens, matoki, chigayo chemafuta, grinding mill, gas tanks and your money they looted, they shall return.”
He further implicated specific individuals in the assault, claiming:
“We know James Takavengwa Gwenzi, Rinos Kabunu and Devlodge Phibion Katsande beat you up… we heard you fought back but stones were used to attack you, and knobkeries, you bled profusely and you were given pfuko, laced with poison.
“We know they buried you alive, you breathed your last underground and Inspector Musekiwa…was, indeed, a stumbling block, however, at last we are there, you can now rest in peace. We know Terrance Nhavira and Byton Andrew Muganhu are using your truck and Byton took your wife the day you were buried and your household property.
Gwenzi and Katsande, along with Madzibaba Ishmael, have been charged in.
