City Power said it cut the electricity supply for residential and commercial properties in Ormonde and Selby that owe the entity a combined R32 million.
The power utility and law enforcement agencies carried out a disconnection drive on Thursday.
The electricity supplier also removed a large power user housing informal recyclers in Village Deep due to continued attempts to illegally reconnect to the grid.
City Power’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said: “Additionally, a panel beating company in Ophirton with an outstanding debt of over R8.3 million was discovered to have an inactive meter but receives electricity illegally from a neighbouring property and is making monthly payments to them instead of City Power.”
Mangena said the unauthorized connection and payment arrangement violated the utility’s regulations.
“A level 3 disconnection was imposed on the business that was illegally supplying electricity, and a fine of R30,000 was issued for aiding and abetting an illegal connection.”
