2 men linked to foiled Khayelitsha cash-in-transit heist expected back in court

Two men linked to a foiled cash-in-transit heist in Khayelitsha earlier in August are expected back in the local magistrates court on Wednesday.

Sihle Mabhongo and Simphiwe Mzanywa have been charged with attempted murder, as well as possession of explosives and illegal firearms.

They were part of a group of five suspects who were arrested during a police operation for allegedly planning to rob a cash van in the township.

The case against the five men was struck from the court roll after it emerged that they were not charged and brought to court within 48 hours of their arrest, as the law requires.

Mabhongo and Mzanywa were still in hospital at the time after being wounded in a shootout with police, where eight other suspects were killed.

Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu confirmed that the police were pursuing the other three suspects who were released.

“The last time I checked, they were already looking for those who had been freed. They would be followed up and get re-arrested and get back to court.”

It’s not clear when those arrests will be made.
