Members of the Polish government, armed forces, and civil society marked the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of World War Two on Sunday (September 1) with a ceremony starting before dawn at the site of a German naval attack.
The granite column that towers over the Baltic port city of Gdansk commemorates the seven-day siege of Westerplatte in September 1939, when dozens of Polish soldiers defied the overwhelming firepower of a Nazi German fleet.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk told attendees the anniversary was a moment to think about the bravery of Poles at that time, but also of the future “so that there will never be a need to erect monuments to victims in Poland again”.
Commemorations were also held in the town of Wielun, which was the first to be bombed by the German Luftwaffe on the morning of Friday, September 1, 1939.
