According to his agent, Barry McPherson, Jones died peacefully early Monday morning with his family by his side.

Throughout his extensive career, James Earl Jones starred in notable films such as Field of Dreams, Coming to America, and The Lion King, where he lent his voice to Mufasa. Yet, he remains best known for portraying Darth Vader, the ultimate villain in the Star Wars saga, whose deep, resonant voice captivated audiences worldwide.

Mark Hamill, who starred as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader’s son in the series, paid tribute to Jones on social media, posting “RIP Dad” accompanied by a broken heart emoji, reflecting the actor’s significant contribution to the Star Wars universe.

Kevin Costner, Jones’ co-star in Field of Dreams, shared:

Octavia Spencer also honoured Jones, writing that his legendary voice and talent will forever be remembered. Crystal Minkoff, wife of The Lion King co-director Rob Minkoff, recalled Jones’ role as Mufasa, stating:

“Rest in power, Mr. Jones. You fulfilled a young animator’s dream when you accepted the role. Your legacy lives on.”

James Earl Jones’ iconic voice extended beyond the silver screen. He was the voice behind CNN’s signature phrase, “This is CNN,” a tagline that became synonymous with the network. CNN reflected on the loss, saying:

“His voice lent our brand authority and grace for decades. The world will miss that voice.”
