ZRP Warns Motorists Using Plateless Vehicles, Illegal Blue Lights, Sirens
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a fresh warning to motorists driving vehicles without registration plates or fitted with unauthorised blue lights, sirens and other emergency-style gadgets. Police say offenders face arrest and vehicle impoundment.
The warning was issued on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, as authorities move against what they described as a growing problem on Zimbabwean roads.
ZRP Targets Plateless Vehicles And Illegal Gadgets
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police had observed motorists driving without number plates and others installing equipment reserved for authorised emergency and security vehicles.
He stressed that such conduct is an offence and warned motorists that excuses would not prevent enforcement action.
“It is regrettable for the Zimbabwe Republic Police to remind Zimbabweans that it is a serious offence for any motorist or individual to drive vehicles without number plates in the country or fit blue lights and other gadgets on vehicles which are not permitted,” Commissioner Nyathi said.
According to the ZRP statement, Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba has instructed police stations, districts and provinces to take action against offenders.
Police Ordered To Arrest Offenders
The directive includes impounding vehicles without registration plates and those fitted with illegal blue lights.
Nyathi said the operation is intended to restore order on the roads and address the misuse of equipment associated with emergency and security services.
“No excuses from drivers or motorists will be entertained by police officers,” he said.
The warning places motorists using such vehicles on notice as police enforcement intensifies.

The latest warning could see motorists with plateless vehicles and unauthorised emergency-style equipment facing immediate police action.
Drivers have been urged to ensure their vehicles comply with registration and equipment requirements to avoid arrest or impoundment.
