Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Free State: SAWS

The South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, resulting in strong damaging winds, excessive lightning and heavy downpours expected over Mafube, Phumelela and Maluti-a-Phofung municipalities in the Free State.

It says this might result in localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas, and bridges. Communities are advised not to seek cover under trees or tall objects during storms and to park cars under shelter. Meanwhile, the Free State government says relevant provincial departments and municipalities are collaborating to ensure immediate coordinated responses to the forecast inclement weather conditions.

Cold weather conditions are expected to accompany rainfall in some parts of the province.

Cooperative Governance Spokesperson Zimasa Mbewu says light snowfall is also expected over the mountain peaks. And this could affect the Xharipe and Thabo Mofutsanyana districts.Meanwhile in KwaZulu-Natal, the government has set up a satellite emergency service on the N3 at Van Reneen’s Pass and R617 in Underberg. Authorities say teams are on standby to ensure a quick response.

The Weather Service is forecasting heavy rain and possible snow from Monday. The Department of Transport says this is to ensure immediate assistance to motorists. Last weekend, hundreds of road users were trapped in the snow on the N3 route near Van Reneens Pass. The heavy snowfall led to road closures, including parts of the N3.
