NPRC Chairperson Justice Sello Nare Has Died In South Africa

Retired Justice Sello Nare, Chairperson of Zimbabwe’s National Peace and Reconciliation Commission (NPRC), has died.

He was 81.

A family spokesperson, Lesley Ncube, confirmed his passing to CITE, stating that Nare died on Saturday night at a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, following a prolonged illness.

Nare, who served as NPRC Chair from 2018, played a crucial role in Zimbabwe’s peacebuilding efforts. Appointed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Nare succeeded Cyril Ndebele in leading the commission tasked with fostering national unity.

“He was deeply committed to nation-building and peace. He travelled across the country, advocating for reconciliation and unity until his retirement,” said Ncube.

Born 1943 in Gwanda District, Matabeleland South, Nare’s distinguished career spanned education, law, and national reconciliation. Nare was known for his expertise in legal and community matters and was fluent in six local languages.

Before pursuing a legal career, Nare worked as a teacher in Zvishavane and Gwanda, eventually becoming a headmaster. His passion for the legal profession developed during his teaching years, prompting him to join Zimbabwe’s Judicial Services Commission (JSC). He rose through the ranks from court interpreter to judge.

“He had a strong passion for both education and law. While serving as a teacher, his interest in the legal profession blossomed,” Ncube noted.

Nare’s legal career included serving as a magistrate in Bulawayo, Hwange, and Chiredzi, as well as provincial magistrate for Mashonaland West and Matabeleland North.

In 1993, he became a regional magistrate in Harare, and in 2003, he was appointed President of the Administrative Court in Bulawayo. He later presided over the Labour Court until his retirement in 2013.

In addition to his legal work, Nare was an elder at the Church of Christ in Bulawayo and chaired the Lupane State University Staff Disciplinary Committee.

Nare is survived by his wife, Leticia Gladys Nare, three children, and 11 grandchildren.
