A football match between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo ended in tragedy on Monday.
One person died during a stampede at Harare’s National Sports Stadium.
The incident happened around Gate Two as fans entered the stadium for the match.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the fatal incident in a statement.
Police said the incident involved a public order vehicle and a pedestrian.
It happened at approximately 6.30 pm as the match was getting underway.
Police launch investigation into fatal incident
Authorities have now launched a comprehensive investigation into what happened.
Police said the probe will establish the circumstances surrounding the pedestrian’s death.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police have not yet released further details about the victim.
The investigation will also examine the events surrounding the incident at the stadium entrance.
Meanwhile, police urged the public to await further information from investigators.
Police send condolences to bereaved family
The Commissioner-General of Police expressed condolences to the victim’s family.
The police said they would provide a detailed statement after completing their investigations.
The incident cast a shadow over the football fixture in Harare.
The match had attracted supporters to the National Sports Stadium before the tragedy occurred.
Authorities are expected to provide more information as the investigation progresses.
Police have not indicated whether anyone has been arrested over the incident.
