Get ready for an enchanting evening of pure vocals, traditional rhythms, and authentic African dance as Nobuntu, Zimbabwe’s internationally acclaimed all-female a cappella quartet, takes the stage at the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts, located on the Ocean County College Main Campus in Toms River, New Jersey, on October 16.
Nobuntu, whose name represents an African concept that values humbleness, love, unity, and family from a woman’s perspective, embodies the spirit of African culture and female empowerment. Their repertoire seamlessly blends traditional Zimbabwean songs, Afro Jazz, and Gospel, creating a unique sound that has captivated audiences worldwide.
With minimalistic percussion and traditional instruments like the Mbira (thumb piano), Nobuntu’s concerts are a testament to the power of pure vocals. Their energetic performances are infused with organic dance movements, making each show an immersive experience.
The group has earned international recognition, with notable accolades including a nomination for Best Musician of the Year at the 2015 Zimbabwe International Women Awards in London and two-time winner of Best Imbube Group at the Bulawayo Arts Awards in 2017 and 2019. They have performed across Europe, Canada, and Africa, and have released three critically acclaimed recordings: Thina (2013), Ekhaya (2016), and Obabes beMbube (2018).
