RIP: Solly Moholo laid to rest

Legendary South African gospel star Solly Moholo is being laid to rest in Pretoria on Saturday.

The 65-year-old gospel singer, who was celebrated for his powerful voice and enduring contribution to South African gospel music, passed away last week following multiple heart-related health challenges.

He had undergone medical treatment in South Africa and Botswana to manage his condition.

As the funeral service unfolds in Tshwane, Moholo’s son-in-law, Lesego Nkitseng, expressed deep sadness over the treatment Moholo received while in public hospital care, emphasizing the toll it took on the gospel star during his final days.

“He fought for a good seven weeks in the hospital, and I am incredibly proud of that man. Every time I walked into that ICU unit, I told him, ‘Papa, I am proud of you.’ I don’t think there is any man who could have withstood this pain, and he did it for a full seven weeks. South Africans, we acknowledge that and we thank the dignitaries who have come to honour him,” said Nkitseng.

Moholo’s passing marks the end of an era for the people his music touched.

His genre is deeply rooted in spiritual devotion and cultural expression.

The songster’s loss has resonated across the country, with many reflecting on his legacy and impact in the gospel scene.

‘WE HAVE FAILED SOLLY MOHOLO AS THIS NATION’

Moholo’s friends and colleagues have voiced their disappointment at his funeral, claiming the beloved artist was not adequately supported in the final stages of his life.

In the days leading up to his death, Moholo had traveled to Botswana to pre-launch his latest album, Wubani O Zo Pepeza.

Financial difficulties left him unable to afford critical surgery, which ultimately contributed to his passing.

During the funeral service, his family revealed that he had been moved between several hospitals in a desperate attempt to save his life.

Speakers at the service lamented the treatment Moholo received, with many stating that the nation had failed to rally around the gospel icon in his time of need.

“My underlying messaged is a simple one: We have failed Solly Moholo as this nation,” said one speaker.
