MK Party protests over alleged racism outside estate in Somerset West

MK Party protests over alleged racism outside estate in Somerset West! The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party in the Western Cape held a demonstration on Saturday at Blue Rock Estate in Somerset West, protesting against alleged racism at the estate.

The protest, according to the party, comes after several reported incidents in which black residents were subjected to racial discrimination. One of the key complaints involves black residents allegedly being told to leave the estate, which was historically an area occupied by white residents only.

The MK Party claims that one of its members, who has lived on the estate for the past two years, has endured consistent racism. Despite multiple attempts to address the issue with the estate management, the party says no progress has been made.

The MK Party is now calling for justice, accountability, and support for the affected individual and his family, who they say have been severely impacted by the ongoing racial tensions.

Siyabonga Booysen, the provincial organizer for the MK Party, expressed deep concern about the emotional and psychological toll that the incidents have had on the family.

“The member inside has suffered; he can’t even go to work. The children are not doing well in school. The family is in disarray because of these incidents,” Booysen said. He emphasized the urgent need for counselling for the family, stating that the situation has disrupted their lives in profound ways.

In addition to calling for emotional support for the family, Booysen and the MK Party are demanding that those responsible for the alleged racism be held accountable.

The organization believes that the estate management’s inaction in dealing with the allegations amounts to “recklessness and negligence.” According to the MK Party, despite repeated discussions and promises by management to address the situation, nothing has been done to alleviate the family’s distress or to confront the broader issue of racism within the estate.

Xolani Rhula, the MK Party’s Provincial Head of Security, echoed Booysen’s sentiments, stating that racism should not be tolerated in any part of South Africa, let alone in residential estates. “The issue is that we cannot be in South Africa and still turn a blind eye to racism,” said Rhula. He added, “We believe that if you are a housekeeper of a criminal, then you are a criminal as well.” Rhula’s statement suggests that the MK Party views estate management’s failure to act on the allegations of racism as a form of complicity.

In response to the situation, the MK Party submitted a memorandum to the estate management, outlining several demands aimed at addressing the issue. Among their requests, the party is calling for the affected resident to be exempt from paying rent for the next three months. The MK Party argues that this is a necessary step to compensate for the distress and disruption that the family has endured.

While the protest drew attention to the racial issues at Blue Rock Estate, the estate management has declined to comment on the situation. The silence from management has only heightened the frustration of the MK Party and the affected resident, who feel that their concerns are being ignored.

The demonstration by the MK Party highlights the ongoing challenges of confronting racism in South Africa, a country still grappling with the legacies of apartheid and racial inequality. The protest at Blue Rock Estate is a reminder that, for many, racism remains an entrenched issue in everyday life, affecting housing, education, and employment opportunities for black South Africans.

The MK Party’s call for accountability, counselling, and rent relief for the affected resident reflects their commitment to fighting for justice and ensuring that incidents of racism are addressed head-on. However, without a response from the estate management, it remains to be seen how this particular case will be resolved.

The protest at Blue Rock Estate has shone a spotlight on the broader issue of racism in South African residential areas, and the MK Party hopes that this demonstration will serve as a catalyst for change, not only at Blue Rock but in communities across the country.
