A fire destroyed a Midlands State University (MSU) hostel at the Zvishavane Campus, leaving students stranded.
The fire incident occurred last night, and authorities have not confirmed the cause yet.
Fire Burns Down MSU Zvishavane Campus Hostel
The Midlands Province chapter of the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) confirmed the inferno on social media:
“MSU Zvishavane campus Diamond hostel has caught fire, and our Zvishavane Chapter leadership confirmed the news. Everything is burnt to ashes; students at MSU ZVISH Diamond hostel need to be attended to as soon as possible.“
Unconfirmed reports by some students suggest the fire might have been caused by a faulty electric jug that exploded.
In videos circulating on social media, the students stood helplessly as they watched fierce flames light up the Zvishavane night. The students feared the raging fire would burn electricity cables and pose more danger.
It is still unclear if there are any casualties from the MSU Zvishavane hostel fire.

Worrying Trend
The country has been experiencing mysterious fire incidents recently. On the night of 10 October 2024, a devastating inferno swept through the Mbare Traders Market.
The fire caused severe losses for over 4000 vendors, destroying goods and property. A security officer at the market, Action Chakauya, was arrested for negligently causing the fire.
He allegedly ignited the fire to warm himself at one of the entrances close to the precast wall of the retail. Chakauya lost control of the fire, and it charred property worth an estimated US$5 million.

Reactions To The MSU Zvishavane Hostel Fire
Bel:
“This isn’t merely a Zvishavane issue. It’s a national disgrace! The government’s negligence regarding fire safety measures is intolerable, while students live in dilapidated hostels at MSU Gweru, akin to prison cells. Fees soar to $718, yet we endure abysmal conditions!“
Mugandani:
“Surely, what is happening with these fires?“
Noster:
“Nyika haisi kubhombewa zvishoma nezvishoma here? Pakuda maporofita.“
Chimaeze:
“Hope the students are safe. It won’t be anything good that a student was cut off by fire. It would forever be a tragedy.“
