The African National Congress Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has warned that party members who engage in succession debates prematurely will be disciplined.
Fikile Mbalula made the comments at a media briefing at Luthuli House while delivering the outcomes of the ANC’s recent special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The meeting focussed on interventions to renew the party, build the capacity of branches and improve public accountability. Mbalula says such leadership debates detract from the implementation of the party’s mandate and resolutions.
He says, “The NEC resolved that a guiding framework on leadership issues and processes should be developed, circulated to all structures and discussed. Once adopted, this framework will guide leadership processes at branch, regional, provincial and national levels.

The ANC’s Electoral Committee, led by Comrade Kgalema Motlanthe, will be tasked with examining the influence of money in leadership elections. The African National Congress (ANC) has issued a warning to its members, stating that those who engage in premature succession debates or jockey for leadership roles will face disciplinary actions.
This directive aims to maintain unity within the party and prevent divisive conflicts ahead of the upcoming elections. Party leaders emphasized the importance of focusing on delivering on promises to the South African public, rather than individual political ambitions. By enforcing these guidelines, the ANC hopes to promote cohesion and ensure members prioritize the party’s mission.
The African National Congress has issued a strict directive to discipline any members engaging in succession debates ahead of time.
This decision aims to curb factionalism and internal disputes as the party prepares for upcoming elections. By enforcing this rule, the leadership intends to ensure members remain focused on the party’s goals and unified in serving the public. Members have been reminded that engaging in unauthorized leadership discussions distracts from the ANC’s mission and detracts from critical issues facing South Africa.
