2 arrested and almost R400,000 worth of counterfeit goods seized in Boksburg raid

2 arrested and almost R400,000 worth of counterfeit goods seized in Boksburg raid! In a significant crackdown on counterfeit goods, the Gauteng South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted a large-scale operation, seizing over 1,000 unlawful items and making multiple arrests.

The operation, held on Thursday, October 31, targeted sites in both Boksburg and Mayfair, uncovering illicit goods valued at millions of rand and resulting in the arrest of several individuals involved in illegal manufacturing and distribution.

Counterfeit Raid in Boksburg Yields Thousands of Unlawful Products

The first operation was conducted in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni District, where SAPS confiscated 1,018 counterfeit products valued at an estimated R391,677.

The raid was part of a collaborative effort involving the Gauteng Counterfeit Goods Police Unit, SAPS Boksburg, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) from Germiston, and representatives from affected brands.

During the operation, SAPS arrested two individuals believed to be dealing in counterfeit goods and other unlawful items. Among the seized items were mobile accessories and various counterfeit products.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi commended the operation, highlighting the dedication of the SAPS and the collaborating units in protecting consumers and businesses from the harmful impact of counterfeit goods.

“The operation was a collaborative effort that underscores our commitment to defending the community from counterfeit products and ensuring customers are not exposed to substandard items,” Nevhuhulwi said. The SAPS stressed that counterfeit goods not only harm businesses but also put consumers at risk, as such items often fail to meet quality and safety standards.

Major Seizure in Mayfair: R7 Million Counterfeit Fragrance Factory Uncovered

In a separate operation conducted in Mayfair, Johannesburg, the Hawks raided a residential property that had been transformed into a counterfeit fragrance production facility.

The raid targeted a large-scale illegal operation manufacturing knockoff versions of products from the Fine Fragrance Collection brand. The Hawks estimated that the factory’s illicit activities could have caused financial losses of up to R7 million for Fine Fragrance Collection, one of the affected brands.

Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela, spokesperson for the Hawks in Gauteng, provided details about the investigation, revealing that the property on 10th Avenue had been under surveillance for weeks.

“A residential address in Mayfair was put under surveillance to confirm the alleged illegal activities,” Mavimbela stated. “On October 17, the Hawks team descended upon the premises, uncovering a fully equipped clandestine factory in the process of manufacturing Fine Fragrance Collection products.”

Inside the residence, officers discovered industrial equipment and supplies, including perfume mixing containers, bottles, labels, and other packaging materials that were used to produce counterfeit fragrances.

The raid led to the arrest of four Ethiopian nationals, who were found at the scene and are suspected of running the illicit operation. All four were charged with crimes related to the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit products, with their case registered at the Johannesburg Central Police Station.

The Fight Against Counterfeit Goods in Gauteng

Counterfeit goods operations, such as those carried out in Boksburg and Mayfair, highlight the proactive measures taken by Gauteng law enforcement to combat counterfeit products.

The manufacture and sale of counterfeit goods not only threaten the profitability of legitimate businesses but also endanger consumers who may unknowingly purchase items that fail to meet safety and quality standards.

The combined efforts of multiple units—SAPS, the Hawks, and brand protection representatives—demonstrate the value of collaboration in tackling the counterfeit trade. By removing these counterfeit goods from circulation, law enforcement hopes to send a strong message to those involved in the illegal industry while protecting both consumers and legitimate business interests.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Steps

As authorities continue to crack down on counterfeit operations, the investigation into the seized goods and confiscated equipment will proceed.

Forensic analysis will be conducted on the materials confiscated from the Mayfair residence, which could provide valuable information for further action against the counterfeit supply chain. SAPS and the Hawks are also expected to pursue additional investigations to identify any links between these raids and other illegal operations in the region.

Meanwhile, the arrested individuals are expected to face charges, with the likelihood of more charges being added as investigations proceed. Authorities are hopeful that these arrests and seizures will discourage further counterfeit activity, safeguarding consumers and preserving the integrity of brands impacted by counterfeiting.

Community Involvement: Reporting Counterfeit Activity

Law enforcement has encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity related to counterfeit goods, reminding consumers that counterfeit operations often have wide-reaching consequences.

By partnering with law enforcement and brand holders, community members can play a role in reducing the prevalence of counterfeit products in the market.

The recent operations in Boksburg and Mayfair serve as a reminder of the persistent problem of counterfeit goods in Gauteng and the efforts required to combat it.

Law enforcement’s dedication to ongoing investigations and swift actions against counterfeit operations demonstrate a commitment to protecting both the economic and personal safety of South African citizens.
