Details of the Accident
Captain Nkosi provided details of the accident, explaining that the unidentified man was struck by the taxi while crossing or standing near the busy N4 road junction.
The taxi driver, who immediately reported the accident, indicated he had little time to react due to the unexpected appearance of the man on the road. Despite emergency responders’ best efforts to save him, the man’s injuries proved fatal after he arrived at the hospital.
At the time of the incident, the man was wearing a distinctive gold Kaizer Chiefs T-shirt along with denim jeans. His age is estimated to be between 30 and 35 years, but he was not carrying any form of identification, which has complicated efforts to notify his family.
Police Call for Community Assistance
In light of the situation, police are urging community members in and around Komatipoort, especially those who may be missing a family member, friend, or acquaintance fitting the man’s description, to come forward. Captain Nkosi has emphasized the importance of community involvement in cases where unidentified victims need to be identified.
“We request anyone who has lost a family member or friend to assist us in identifying the victim,” he said. Sergeant Vincent Mashaba of Komatipoort SAPS is available for direct contact at 082-449-0272, while the Komatipoort police station can be reached at 013-793-7321.

Previous Fatal Accidents on the N4
The N4 highway, which stretches across multiple provinces, has been the site of several fatal accidents in recent months, underscoring ongoing safety concerns on this well-traveled road.
Just last month, a devastating side-swipe collision on the N4 toll road in Middelburg claimed four lives, including that of an infant. The crash involved a bakkie (Toyota Hilux double cab) and a sedan, both reportedly traveling in the same direction when they collided after midnight near the Hendrina turn-off.
Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for Mpumalanga’s Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, reported that the Toyota Hilux rolled multiple times following the collision, leading to a catastrophic scene.
Three of the four victims, including the driver, were occupants of the bakkie, while the fourth fatality was a passenger in the sedan. Two additional individuals were critically injured and immediately transported to Middelburg Hospital for further treatment, while the driver of the sedan sustained serious injuries.
Road Safety Concerns and Community Vigilance
The recent accidents highlight the ongoing road safety challenges on the N4, raising concerns among residents and authorities alike. The N4 is a critical route that connects Mpumalanga to several major cities, resulting in high volumes of traffic, including long-distance and heavy transport vehicles.
Given the frequency of accidents on this highway, law enforcement and local authorities have been urging drivers to exercise caution, especially during late-night or early-morning hours when visibility is lower.
Captain Nkosi urged drivers to remain vigilant and observe all traffic regulations to help prevent further tragedies on the N4 and surrounding roads. He also reminded the community to stay proactive in reporting any suspicious or concerning activity to law enforcement.
Looking Forward: Efforts to Identify the Victim and Prevent Future Incidents
As the investigation continues, the Komatipoort police remain hopeful that someone will come forward to help identify the victim of Monday’s accident.
Captain Nkosi and Sergeant Mashaba are committed to assisting the victim’s family and ensuring they are informed promptly once his identity is confirmed.
In the meantime, provincial officials are working to address safety concerns along the N4 highway, encouraging more collaboration between local law enforcement and road safety agencies.
With increasing traffic and the ongoing risk of accidents, both community members and authorities are urged to remain vigilant, ensuring the safety of all who travel these roads.
