The Roman Catholic Church community is grieving the sudden and tragic loss of a 19-year-old man named Nigel Chibekeswa, after he drowns at Zanadu Resort in Concession while attending a church party. Chibekeswa’s friends attempted a rescue, but their efforts were sadly unsuccessful, and they ultimately retrieved his body.

According to eyewitnesses, Nigel, who could not swim, ventured into the water during the gathering. Despite his friends’ swift response, they could not save him in time.

Police Warning Against Water Hazards

Following this tragedy, local law enforcement has once again urged people to exercise caution near water bodies, particularly during social gatherings. The police emphasized the importance of avoiding water-based activities without proper supervision and reminded the public of the dangers associated with swimming in unsupervised areas.

Related Incidents Highlight Drowning Risks

This incident echoes a similar tragedy that recently unfolded in South Africa, where a group of teenagers attending a beach party in Durban faced a heartbreaking accident. Seventeen-year-old Thabo Mkhize was swept away by a strong current while attempting to swim. Much like Nigel’s friends, Thabo’s companions did all they could to save him, but his body was only recovered hours later.

Calls for Enhanced Safety Measures at Social Gatherings

The unfortunate loss of young lives in such circumstances has led both local and regional authorities to call for heightened awareness and caution around water. Authorities are encouraging the public to ensure that qualified individuals supervise gatherings near water bodies, and they urge attendees, especially youths, to avoid swimming without proper oversight.
