A man from Chipinge has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following the attempted murder of his sister. He is also awaiting his trial on the murder of his sister’s 18-Months-Old baby.
Details of the Family Dispute
The incident began when Chirigo, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, became involved in a heated argument with his sister. During the confrontation, he verbally insulted her and demanded that she return to her husband’s home with her children, implying that her presence was unwanted.

The argument quickly turned physical as Chirigo grabbed a metal spanner and struck his sister repeatedly on her hands. Desperate to escape, she fled into a nearby hut and locked herself inside, hoping to find protection from the attack. However, Chirigo broke the window in an attempt to enter the hut.
Violent Pursuit
Realizing her dire situation, the victim unlocked the door and ran for her brother’s house, approximately 50 meters away. Tragically, Chirigo caught up to her and intensified the assault, striking her on the neck and even attacking her young child, an 18-month-old strapped to her back, with a machete. The infant did not survive the attack.

Court Sentencing
After reviewing the case, the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court sentenced Chirigo to 10 years in prison for attempted murder. His case regarding the fatal attack on the child is pending and will be addressed in the High Court, where he will face additional charges for the infant’s tragic death.
