A scandal has unfolded at St. Ignatius College in Chishawasha after former students are seeking compensation from the Roman Catholic, alleging that they suffered abuse in the hands of a late priest for decades.
Victims Unite for Justice and Closure
An advocacy group named Justice, Healing, and Closure (JHC) has been formed by survivors of the alleged abuse. The group actively pursues accountability from Catholic authorities, including those at St Ignatius College and Jesuit leaders at Garnet House in Mt Pleasant, Harare.

According to sources, Father Porter is accused of exploiting his position to commit acts of sodomy and indecent assault against new students, with allegations spanning over several years. Despite earlier attempts to bring these claims to light, the matter was reportedly ignored while Porter was still alive.
Personal Testimonies Emerge
Social media groups created by victims reveal harrowing accounts of abuse. One victim described the enduring trauma, saying,
“The shame and disgust I feel from being forced to touch him still haunt me, making normal relationships almost impossible.”
Another recounted how Porter’s inappropriate actions turned religious activities, such as serving at mass, into moments of fear and violation.
Porter allegedly used extracurricular clubs, including the Photography and Sailing Clubs, to identify potential victims. Survivors describe being coerced into his room under the guise of religious preparation, only to face abuse.
Roman Catholic Church To Take Accountability
The Catholic Church in Zimbabwe has initiated steps to address these allegations. Father Anesu Manyere, a counsellor and Jesuit leader, has been assigned to meet with victims to hear their stories and provide support. Meetings have been held at Garnet House, owned by the Jesuits, to gather testimonies and work towards resolution.
Father Lawrence Daka, the current rector of St Ignatius College, shared that they are seeking healing and closure for affected parties. The school has also ordered investigations on the matter. However, he also questioned why the victims took so long to come forward.
Father Porter’s Biography and Controversial Legacy
Born in Hornchurch, Essex, in 1933, Father Porter was educated by Jesuits in London before beginning his mission in Zimbabwe in the early 1960s. He held various roles, including teacher, bursar, and boarding master at St Ignatius College. Later in his career, he served as the province treasurer and chaplain at the LCBL novitiate in Borrowdale. Despite these achievements, his legacy is now overshadowed by the allegations of abuse.
