CID Officers Arrested For Bribery
Meanwhile, in a separate case, two Central Investigations Department (CID) officers, Tofarasei Chipindu (33) and Japhet Matahwa (34), were arrested in April 2024 for bribery. They appeared before the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court, facing bribery charges. The officers are accused of using their positions to obstruct justice in a theft investigation.
According to reports, on February 8, 2024, the accused summoned Laston Changamire to the CID Triangle offices, informing him that he and Tawanda Changamire were implicated in a theft case. The officers allegedly claimed the duo had received USD$150 each from stolen funds.
The CID officers reportedly demanded a bribe of USD$150 from both Laston and Tawanda Changamire to avoid being prosecuted alongside Justin Saizi, another individual implicated in the investigation. The Changamires were allegedly coerced into providing the bribe.
The bribery attempt came to light after a whistleblower, prompting an investigation by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission. This resulted in the police officers’ arrests.
