Fortune Chasi Expresses Desire To Return To The Energy Ministry As Electricity Situation Worsens

Former energy minister Fortune Chasi has addressed pleas by the public to return to the portfolio as the electricity situation worsens.

Chasi spoke about this on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Blacked-Out Country

The country has been experiencing biting power cuts over the past couple of months as the water levels at Lake Kariba deplete. As of 18 November, the Zambezi River Authority said the usable live water for power generation was only 2.40%, terribly shadowing the 15.15% from the same period in 2023.

The power situation worsened so much that lately, some areas have been getting electricity for two to three hours at night.

Yesterday, the whole country had a blackout.

This morning, ZETDC announced:

We regret to advise our valued customers that the national grid experienced a system disturbance last night resulting in a system blackout. Our Engineers reacted and began the restoration process. We are happy to advise that as of this morning most of the load centres have been picked countrywide. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Fortune Chasi Addresses Pleas To Return To Energy Ministry As Electricity Situation Worsens

As the country falters from crippling power cuts, some have been hogging former minister Fortune Chasi’s social media, begging him to return to the portfolio.

In May 2019, President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed Chasi to the energy and power development ministry. The situation was the worst electricity crisis on record, and in a few months at the helm, the power situation improved.

However, Chasi was fired in August 2020 following his bruising battle with ZESA chair Dr Sydney Gata, who is married to Mnangagwa’s niece, Angie Mayahle.

Zimbabwe is now experiencing hectic power cuts, and some social media users feel Chasi is the best man to rescue the situation.

The former minister reacted to the calls on his X handle:

I can’t pretend that I am not seeing your “demands” to go back to my former job. I do not take your confidence in me lightly. I encounter it daily & everywhere. As I have said before, serving one’s country is a duty we must all be ready. I am!
