“It was such an exciting moment for me. I honestly felt so proud of myself that I got to make history for Nigeria. And not only for Nigeria—it was also a very fulfilling moment for me because I got to achieve one of my dreams,” Chidimma told Business Insider.

Her success was a first for Nigeria, as no contestant from the country had previously advanced to the top five at Miss Universe. Chidimma’s accomplishment drew widespread attention and admiration from Nigerians and international fans alike.

Overcoming Self-Doubt

Chidimma’s journey to becoming Miss Universe runner-up was not without personal challenges. She candidly shared how she had doubted her abilities throughout the competition, struggling with feelings of inadequacy.

“I always felt like I wasn’t really good enough, and I wasn’t capable of winning or even placing,” she admitted. “As much as I had a journey of growth and learning a lot about myself and my confidence, I was still doubting myself and not thinking so highly of myself.”

Reflecting on her experience, Chidimma shared the lessons she learned:

“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that I am capable, and I should not allow people to dictate my life and my journey. My future is always going to be in my hands.”

Identity Controversy

Chidimma’s success has not come without controversy. Questions surrounding her residency in Soweto, Gauteng, surfaced, especially after her withdrawal from Miss South Africa due to an identity theft scandal. Despite this, Chidimma maintained her focus on representing Nigeria and achieving her dreams.

A Shift in Focus: Education and Self-Care

While many fans hoped to see Chidimma continue in the pageantry world, she revealed that Miss Universe marked the end of her pageant journey. Instead, she plans to focus on her education and personal growth.

“I am putting pageantry to bed. I’m going to focus more on my education and establishing who Chidimma is. More into runways. There are so many things I would like to touch on and see where my potential can go,” she told BBC Pidgin.

Chidimma emphasized the importance of prioritizing her mental health and personal well-being after the whirlwind of the pageant circuit.

“I’m glad it’s all done so I can focus on myself and my mental health. I think that’s important for me,” she said.
