The court heard that 28-year-old Lewis Mbeli conspired with Tyson Moyo (29), Zibusiso Ndlovu (28), Zibusiso Manungwa (29), and Nqobile Nxumalo (29) to rob Caroline Richards, who had just arrived from the United States. Mbeli reportedly informed the group that Richards had arrived with a significant amount of money.
On the night of the robbery, the suspects went to Richards’ home in Woodville. Mbeli, who worked for the family, pretended to step outside to feed the dogs but secretly coordinated with the gang. Moments later, he re-entered the house, pretending to be a victim, as Moyo and Ndlovu burst in, allegedly brandishing a firearm.
The robbers demanded cash and valuables from Richards and her family. According to the prosecution, they made off with $2,700 in cash, cell phones, a laptop, clothing, and other items totalling US$5,000 in value.
