Arsenal Victory Over Man Utd Turns Tragic: Ugandan Fan Shot Dead After Celebrating Too Loudly
A Ugandan Arsenal fan celebrating the team’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United met a tragic end after being allegedly shot dead by a security guard. The incident occurred in Lukaya town, central Uganda, about 100km from the capital Kampala.
Arsenal Victory Over Man Utd Turns Tragic
The shooting happened late in the match as jubilant Arsenal fans gathered at a local restaurant. Witnesses reported that the building’s manager, frustrated by the noise from the excited crowd, instructed the security guard to intervene. When fans ignored a warning to quiet down, the manager reportedly turned off the restaurant’s power, escalating tensions.
Enraged fans responded with even louder celebrations, prompting the security guard to allegedly open fire. Multiple shots were fired, resulting in the death of 30-year-old John Ssenyonga, who died at the scene. Another fan, Lawrence Mugejera, sustained injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Suspects Flee as Police Investigate
Both the guard and the restaurant manager fled the scene and remain at large. Police have launched a manhunt, recovering a firearm from the location. Twaha Kasirye, the regional police spokesperson, condemned the incident and called on the public to provide any information that could lead to the suspects’ arrest.
“We condemn the incident and we ask anyone with information that can help the police to bring the suspect to book to speak up,” Kasirye said.
Football-Related Violence on the Rise in Uganda
This is not the first instance of football-related violence in Uganda. The English Premier League has a massive following in the country, and tensions between rival fans often escalate dangerously.
In October, an argument over a match between Arsenal and Liverpool led to one fan stabbing another. Last January, a youth councillor in Kampala lost his life after stepping in to break up a fight sparked by Arsenal’s loss to Manchester City. Just days earlier, another Arsenal fan was fatally attacked in Adjumani, West Nile district.
