Our #WCW today is Mildred Chiri, a trailblazing figure in Zimbabwe’s public sector. As the country’s auditor general, she has established herself as a champion of transparency and accountability. With a career spanning over three decades, Chiri has demonstrated unwavering dedication to her work, earning recognition and respect from her peers.
Mildred Chiri was born in Zimbabwe. She holds a Bachelor of Accounting degree from the University of Zimbabwe. Her professional qualifications include being a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. Chiri is also a Registered Public Accountant.
Chiri began her career in 1983 as an Audit Assistant at the Office of the Controller and Auditor General. She rose through the ranks to become Controller and Auditor General in 2004. In this role, Chiri has overseen audits of Zimbabwe’s public sector, identifying significant concerns. Her office has uncovered corporate governance issues, “ghost workers,” and excessive remuneration. They have also identified procurement problems, including tender irregularities and contract splitting.
Chiri’s leadership extends beyond Zimbabwe. She is a Board member of the INTOSAI Development Initiative and has been a member of the Governing Board of AFROSAI. Her contributions have earned her the Chartered Secretary of the Year award in 2010 and the Women’s Top Leadership Excellence Award for the Government Sector in 2016.
Chiri’s efforts have made a significant impact on promoting transparency and accountability in Zimbabwe’s public sector. Her work has also been recognized internationally, solidifying her position as a respected figure in her field.
