ZRP Arrest ‘King Munhumutapa,’ Charge Him with Insulting President Mnangagwa
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested Timothy Chiminya, the self-styled King Munhumutapa and charged him with undermining or insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Why King Munhumutapa Was Arrested
Chiminya was taken into custody on Monday after ZRP officers accused him of overstepping his bounds by appointing and dethroning traditional chiefs—actions they claim are reserved for the President. Authorities allege Chiminya’s conduct has caused ridicule and undermined the authority of President Mnangagwa.
Represented by Gift Mtisi of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Chiminya faces accusations of dethroning legitimately appointed chiefs in some parts of the country. He appeared before Harare Magistrate Sheunesu Matowa on Wednesday and was remanded in custody until January 7, 2025. Prosecutors requested a mental health evaluation, and the court ordered that two medical doctors assess Chiminya’s state of mind.

Zimbos React to Chiminya’s Arrest
The case has sparked widespread reaction online after ZLHR shared the news on X (formerly Twitter). While some Zimbabweans criticized the arrest, others responded with humour and curiosity over the unfolding saga. Here are some of the reactions:
@charambazezai:
Herald Headline should read Mnangagwa fighting to wrestle Munhumutapa title from real Munhumutapa
@thanxtino:
Chiminya ndimoyo and has the right to use the munhumutapa title. We the VaRozvi people have the right to that title. Moyo wedzimbabwe!
@century_27:
Ummm of all the problems we have in Zimbabwe we choose to deal with this one,really???. Police bootlicking on another level. So is Pres Mnangagwa assuming the title Munhumutapa officially to the point of police enforcing it and seeing undermining his powers in this guy action?
@ShrekForever3:
Kikiki hilarious but I think these zanu pf people must seek help from their party lawyers not you guys
@ChesterMatsa:
