Zimbabwe Introduces Breathalysers to Curb Drunk Driving

The Zimbabwean government has taken a significant step towards enhancing road safety by introducing breathalysers for police use at roadblocks, particularly during the festive season. This initiative, spearheaded by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), aims to curb road accidents caused by motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona emphasized the importance of vigilance among drivers and road users to minimize accidents. He highlighted the need to avoid risky behaviors such as speeding, overloading, and driving under the influence of alcohol. The minister also confirmed that the TSCZ is in the process of acquiring additional breathalysers to equip more police officers on the roads.

The government’s efforts to enhance road safety have received support from various stakeholders, including the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe (ICZ), which contributed resources for the purchase of breathalyser machines. The police are also coordinating with the Ministry of Health and Child Care to test drivers suspected of being under the influence.
