Ministry of Health Scraps Out O’Level Mathematics as a Requirement For General Nurse Training?
In a surprising move, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has seemingly scrapped O’level Mathematics as a requirement for General Nurse Training.
For years, Maths, English and Science with at least grade C or better has always been a basic requirement for one to qualify for nurse training.
Ministry of Health and Child Care Updates Requirements for May Intake, Emphasizing English and Science Subjects
However, the Ministry of Health and Child Care recently released an advert for May intake and Mathematics was not stated as a requirement.
The advert, which was published on Sunday 7 April 2024, states that a minimum of 5’0′ Level subjects with passes in English Language, and a Science subject and three others is now required.
“Applications for the three-year Diploma Nurse Training to be conducted by the Ministry of Health and Child Health Care (MoHCC) are invited from suitably qualified holders of the following qualifications.
- – A minimum of 5’0′ Level subjects with passes in English Language, and a Science subject and three others (that exclude practical subjects which are Fashion and Fabrics, Metal Work, Graphic Art, Art and Woodwork) at Grade C or better obtained from not more than two sittings with full certificates as Examination Result Slips are not accepted,” reads part of the advert.
If the Ministry of Health and Child Care advert for May intake is to go by Mathematics is no longer mandatory for one to apply for the General Nurse Training.

Controversial Shift: Social Media Divided as Mathematics Requirement for Nurse Training Sparks Debate
This seemingly new development has sparked mixed reactions on social media. While some have welcomed the removal of Mathematics as a requirement for Nurse training some social media users have however expressed their reservations over the move.
Here are some of the reaction;
@UnathiAfrika;
In fact, Maths in Zimbabwe has hardly ever been used for inclusivity purposes but just to exclude people for nothing. Many of these things don’t even require Maths. Next should be Education. Unless one is headed for STEM and EMS, what is Maths for?
@CCC4lye
it’s shocking some people will die with overdose,That’s poor practice
@gweruzamb;
Does all those Nurse Aides going to UK have Maths. Maths has nothing to do with General Nursing but it just limits the number of candidates.
@introthevert;
We gonna die of overdose it’s over
@brass263;
It’s a welcome move and could potentially see more people pursuing the nursing career. The emphasis on Math can be a stumbling block for a lot of people; more on job training and ensuring people practice due diligence when administrating medication is essential.
