In a remarkable and historic achievement, sixteen-year-old Thomas Machingaidze from Zimbabwe has broken barriers by becoming the country’s first astronaut trainee.
He has been accepted into the prestigious International Institute of Astronautical Sciences in the United States, where he will undergo training to fulfill his dream of becoming an astronaut.
From Simulations to Real-World Training: Thomas Machingaidze’s Journey
Soeaking to ZBC News, Thomas Machingaidze revealed that his journey into space exploration began at the Advanced Space Academy at the US Space and Rocket Centre, where he had the opportunity to connect with experienced astronauts.
His team’s outstanding performance in a Mars Landing simulation earned them the Commanders Cup, marking him as the first Zimbabwean and the only black person to venture into a field predominantly dominated by white minds.
Reflecting on his experiences, Thomas said,
” “I delved into immersive experiences from donning real-life spacesuits to soaring through the skies in high G/zero- G flights and piloting an X300 plane every endeavor deepened my reverence for the cosmos.”
