Some Evaton residents describe water quality as horrific after sewage spill

Some residents in Evaton, south of Johannesburg, described the quality of water coming from their taps as horrific following a sewage spill.

In March, a damaged sewage pipe contaminated the water supply to parts of Evaton.

The Emfuleni Local Municipality said it solved the crisis.

Despite numerous water cuts and rigorous testing, residents claim the water is just not clean.

Speaking to the publication, a resident, who chose to remain anonymous, described what she saw every time she opened her tap.

“When it comes, yoh, you see all the [dirt] with naked eyes.”

Another resident said while doing her laundry on Tuesday, she saw a black oily substance from the tap, despite the municipality’s “good to go” statement on the quality of water.

“I saw something like [a] black oil while handwashing my laundry.”

When approached by the publication, the municipality insisted water is restored to what they termed “adequate quality”.
